Perfect for Industry
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) announced the approval of the Kenwood TK-290 VHF and TK-390 UHF portable radios and approved accessories for use in underground mines. The agency reports that these are the first two-way radios submitted to and approved by the agency in ten years.

“MSHA’s approval of these two models fills a void that currently exists in underground mining,” said MSHA Acting Administrator David G. Dye, “It gives mine operators yet another option for communicating underground and ensuring the safety and well-being of their workers.”

The TK-290 K&K2 (DTMF) and TK-390 K &K4 (DTMF) portables are specifically approved for use with the Kenwood KNB-44BK MSHA rechargeable 1500 mAH capacity Ni-Cd battery packs and several models of speaker mics and headsets appropriate for mine use.

MSHA’s Approval and Certification Center, located in Triadelphia, W. VA, tests a wide range of mining equipment, components, instruments and materials submitted by commercial manufacturers to ensure they meet government standards for safe design and construction. Once a product has been successfully tested and evaluated, a license is issued authorizing the manufacturer to produce and distribute its product for use in mines.

Kenwood U.S.A. Corporation-Communications Sector is a worldwide provider of mobile and portable radios and custom systems to public safety, government and commercial users as well as amateur radio equipment.
